Keeping the Property Safe and Sound
The primary security guard function is to ensure that a property – and all of its occupants – remains safe and undisturbed, according to Monster. Not only do guards keep a close eye on anyone who tries to enter the grounds, they supervise activities that go on inside, too. From carefully looking at security cameras to walking around and examining a building's many sections, corridors and entrances, the duty of a security guard is to cover all the bases, over and over again.


Interactions With Guests
One big function of a security officer involves interaction with guests. If an individual tries to enter a building to meet with someone who works in one of its divisions, the security guard often has to confirm the person's identity by looking at a driver's license or similar documentation.
Once the security guard verifies the person's identity and ensures that the other party is indeed expecting him, he can show the guest how to get to his intended destination within the property. This often involves pointing out elevators, indicating what exact floor something is on and mentioning key landmarks – such as a snack vending machine.


Paying Attention to Unusual Incidents
One major role of a security guard involves paying close attention to any unusual incidents, according to Career Explorer. Being an effective security guard calls for vigilance. If a guard notices that a security camera appears to have been tampered with in any way, it's his job to notify the appropriate department without delay. If he sees any activity that appears even remotely suspicious on the security camera, he has to do the 
If any of the property's equipment has suddenly gone missing, he has to keep on top of that, too. If a security guard every catches someone doing something against the property's rules, it's his duty to inform the individual of the regulations. If a guest tries to go through an "employees-only" door, for instance, the security guard has to alert him to the rules. Housekeeping is an operational department in a hotel, which is responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, aesthetic upkeep of rooms, public area, back area and surroundings.
